Creating Outcomes & Rubrics
Overview
What is the Mastery Learning Gradebook?
Outcomes and rubrics are a great way to track assessment in your course. The outcomes tool in Canvas allows instructors to add the course outcomes to the course. The outcomes can then be attached to rubrics that are attached to assignments. The outcomes will also display in the Mastery Learning Gradebook which allows instructors and students to track student mastery over content. See the Setting Up the Mastery Gradebook page for more details on the Mastery Learning Gradebook.
Outcomes - Instructors must define the course outcomes using the outcomes tool in Canvas.
Rubrics - Rubrics can have outcomes associated as criteria. Outcome criteria can be used for grading purposes or not.
Assignments - Rubrics can be attached to any assignment that can be graded.
Grades - The gradebook has a mastery learning gradebook that displays data from the attached outcomes.
Creating Outcomes
Outcomes allow the faculty to track student mastery in a course. Review the numbered items below.
- Click Outcomes in left navigation of the course. The outcome screen will display several options above the list of outcomes in the course.
- Back – Click to go back one level. Outcomes can be organized into groups and the groups will display in three to four panes depending on how nested the groups are organized. This option is helpful navigating back a level in the outcome groups.
- +Outcome – Click +Outcome to create a new outcome. The outcome will display in edit mode in the right pane.
- +Group – Click +Group to add a new group to organize outcomes in in the left pane of the Outcome screen. When a group is selected in the left pane the outcomes in the group will display in middle pane.
- Find – Click Find to locate account level Outcomes and Common Core standards.
- Viewing and Editing Outcomes - Select an outcome from the left pane to display on the right pane. In the right pane options will display for editing (not available for imported outcomes) deleting, and moving the outcome. Depending on how deeply outcomes are nested into groups there can be up to four vertical panes of content. Starting at the left pane select an outcome group to view. Click in the next pane to locate nested outcomes. The outcome or outcome group that is selected will display in right pane. A horizontal scroll bar will display to navigate the panes.
- Manage Rubrics – Click three dots to view the manage rubrics button.
Creating Rubrics
Rubrics in Canvas are part of the collection of tools that make up the Mastery Learning gradebook. Rubrics can be created from the Outcome screen or directly from an assignment. Graded assignments, quizzes, and discussions can have rubrics attached. This allows the instructor to grade work in the SpeedGrader with the rubric attached to the assignment.
To add a rubric to an assignment click Add Rubric under the due date.
With discussion and quizzes the process is slightly different. To add a rubric go to a quiz or discussion click the gear icon and select Add Rubric. It is important to note that in quizzes and discussions students will also need to click the gear icon to view the rubric. In the description be sure to give students directions on how to view the rubric.
The Quiz option is similar to discussions. Click the gear icon and select Show Rubric.
A new rubric will appear. Review the rubric options numbered below. Click Create Rubric when done.
- Title or Find a Rubric – Type a title for a new rubric or locate existing rubric in the course or from higher level.
- Criteria – Click over the text “description of criterion”. The box will display edit mode. Type a new description. Click view longer description. A small dialog box will appear. Add additional information about the criterion. Each criterion will have a set of ratings and point value. A criterion can be deleted by clicking the trash can icon. Click Add Criterion or Find Outcome Criterion to add additional criterion.
- Ratings - To edit the rating description hover over the box until you see the pencil icon. You can add additional ratings by moving the mouse pointer over the line between ratings. When you see a double pointed arrow click to create a new rating.
- Rubric Options - You can choose how you plan to use the rubric with the check box options below the rubric. If you plan to use the rubric for grading be sure to select the box next to Use this rubric for assignment grading.
- Click Create Rubric.
