Participating in Assignment Groups
How to Access Groups
What are Groups?
In the people tab are options for creating and viewing groups. In some courses instructors may require you to work with your classmates in groups. In some cases students will be graded individually or as a group on group assignments.
Please note: Some instructors may restrict students from forming their own groups in a course.
How to Access Groups
If you have been added to a group, there are a couple of ways to access the group. Review the numbered items below.
- When students are added to a group the global navigation will include a link to groups. Students can access groups from the global group menu item or from People in the course menu.
- If using the global groups link, select the desired group. If using the People link in the course menu, click the groups tab and then select the desired group.
- On the groups page via the People link all groups that you have been added to will have a Visit link. If you have been added as group leader, there will also be Manage link.
- If your instructor is allowing students the option to create study groups, the new groups button will display in upper right.
Viewing the Group Space
Each group space will have its own announcements, discussions, collaborations, and conferences area. The group space looks very similar to the course space. (1) You will know that you are in a group by looking the breadcrumb navigation. (2) The course name will appear above the left navigation and is clickable. Click the course name to return to the course. (3) You can also return to the course or other courses using the Dashboard or Courses link. (4) You can return to the groups page using the groups link in the global navigation in Canvas.
Submitting Group Assignments
If the group is associated with an assignment, students may be required to submit an assignment as a group. This will depend on how the instructor has setup the group assignment. If the assignment is setup to grade the group assignment work individually, the assignment settings will be similar to regular assignments and each student will submit their own work. If the assignment is setup for grading the whole group as one unit, the settings will be slightly different. Review the numbered items below.
- Follow the instructor’s directions in the assignment description. Your instructor may designate a team leader who will submit the assignment. Click Submit Assignment on the right sidebar of the assignment page. The file submission will display in the middle content area.
- If the group assignment is grading all members of the group as one unit, an alert message will appear above the submission area. To submit the assignment click Choose File/Browse to locate the assignment on a local drive on the computer. If there are more than one file to submit, click Add Another File.
- Click in the Comments box to add comments about the assignment submission if desired and check the box next to Send Comment to the Whole Group to alert other group members that the assignment has been submitted.
- Click Submit Assignment.
Note: If more than one student submit an assignment to the group assignment, all students will only see the last submission. The instructor will see all submissions.
