How to Choose Technology

Converting an on ground class to online can be daunted task. This document offers suggestions for instructors on how to make the switch and use the technology in purposeful way. Below are some examples of identifying technology that serves the purpose you need. Click an item to view or use the expand all option to see all items in the list.

Organizing Content

In Canvas, Modules is the default course home and this allows you to structure content into sections. You can add preexisting content or create new content shells (assignments, discussions, quizzes, files, and pages) directly from a module. Modules can be setup requirements/prerequisites, mastery paths, or assigned to select students. Canvas content can be designed with DesignPLUS.

Synchronous Communication (Live Meetings)

Canvas Conferences (Big Blue Button) and Zoom can be used for live meetings with video and sharing screen options. The Zoom integration will automatically create a notification and calendar event. Additionally, chat can be used for text based live meetings.

Asynchronous Communication (Anytime)

Use LLC mail/Canvas inbox, calendar events, or announcements to communicate with students. Students will receive messages based on their notification preferences.

Video lectures can be created in a number of different ways. All users in Canvas will have a Studio account. Studio can be used to record or upload lectures, and/or students can submit Studio videos as assignments. In Studio, videos are automatically captioned and can be embedded in course content.

Collaboration

There are a number of tools you can use to encourage students to interact with each other. The peer review and group assignment options are available when editing assignments. Instructors can also setup assignments using the external tool option with Hypothesis or Lucid.

Assignments & Grades

As soon as you create assignments, the gradebook is automatically created. All graded assignments (including quizzes and discussions) will display on the assignment page. On the assignment page, you can organize assignments into assignment groups to weight grades or drop scores. In the gradebook, you can apply grading or missing/late policies and other display options.

Quizzes & Exams

Quizzes and exams can be created directly in Classic or New Quizzes for students to quizzes online. There are several questions types/settings to help you build the quiz to your desired preferences. You can also import quizzes via Respondus or textbook publisher files. If desired, you can use Lockdown Browser to make quizzes more secure.

Class Discussion

Allow students to discuss a topic with each other. Discussion topics can be setup as non-graded or graded.
