Creating Quizzes
On the quiz page you see the different types of quizzes you can create. Click an item to view or use the expand all option to see all items in the list.
Quiz Types
There are four types of assessments you can create with the Classic Quizzes. Depending on the questions types you use in a quiz, the quizzes can be auto graded.
- What quiz types can I create in a course? (Links to an external site.)
- Assignment Quizzes- Assignment quizzes are graded quizzes. Once a student completes a quiz or the quiz has been graded, the score will automatically be recorded in the gradebook.
-
- It is important to note that the points for the quiz are assigned to questions or question groups in the quiz. If you are using individual questions in a quiz, you can change the point value of the quiz by changing the point value of each question or increasing or decreasing the number of questions in the quiz.
- If you are using question groups, you can apply a point value at the group level for each question in the question group. This will override the question points that have been assigned to individual questions.
-
- Practice Quizzes- Practice quizzes are ungraded quizzes. These are similar to graded quizzes with the exception of not being recorded in the gradebook.
- Graded Surveys- Points can be assigned to reward students for completing the survey. The points are not assigned to the questions or question groups in the survey. In the survey settings instructors can make student feedback anonymous.
- Ungraded Surveys- Similar to graded surveys but are not recorded in the gradebook.
- Assignment Quizzes- Assignment quizzes are graded quizzes. Once a student completes a quiz or the quiz has been graded, the score will automatically be recorded in the gradebook.
Quiz Settings
As you scroll down the settings tab in a quiz in edit mode, you will see the the quiz settings. Below is a brief overview of the quiz settings. Learn more by reviewing the following guides.

- How can I create a quiz where students only see one question at a time?
Options and Restrictions
Below are the details of the options. Review the numbered items below.
- Shuffle answers - This option will shuffle the answers in each question in the quiz. Note: This option is set at the quiz level and will affect ALL questions in the quiz. Do NOT use this option if you have quiz questions that are dependent on answer order such as "All of the above" or "Both answers 1 and 3".
- Time Limit - Input the number of minutes students will have to complete the quiz. The timer begins as soon as the students click the Take this quiz button.
- Multiple attempts - Single attempt is the default option. When selecting multiple attempts, more options will become available. Be sure to select your desired options.
- Result options - Please note the default settings are to allow students to see their quiz responses and correct answers. Instructors can choose to prevent students from seeing their quiz responses after they are done taking a quiz.
- One Question at Time - When applied, students will see one question at at time. Instructors have the option to not allow backtracking.
- Require Access Code - Enter a passcode that will be required before the student can complete the quiz. This option is best used in the classroom when you proctor a quiz or when you require students to go to the proctoring lab to complete the quiz.
- Filter IP Addresses - You can filter IP addresses and require students to take a quiz from a specific computer lab. This option must coordinated with Information Systems and Services.
Assign To
See Assignment page for details.
Adding Questions
From the Add tab, there are three ways to add questions to a quiz.
- New Question - Create a question directly in the quiz. You can choose which question type to create. It is important to note that questions added directly to a quiz are automatically added to a question bank called "Unfiled Questions".
- Question Group - When this option is selected, questions that are already in the quiz can be dragged into the group OR you can link to a question bank. The point value for each question in the group and number of questions can be edited in the group settings. This will allow you randomize questions in the quiz.
- Find Questions - This option will display the question banks available in the course. You can choose to add questions directly to the quiz OR create/add a question group to add the questions to BEFORE you add them to the quiz.

Creating and Importing Questions
There are several options for creating quizzes and importing the questions into Canvas. Click an item to view or use the expand all option to see all items in the list.
How to Access Question Banks
Click Quizzes in the course menu. From the options menu select manage question banks.
Managing Question Banks
It is extremely important to understand that there is no direct connection to questions in quizzes to questions in question banks. Questions stored in question banks are considered templates and are considered a copy. If you edit questions in the question banks, the updates will NOT appear in the quiz that has the same questions. If you edit questions in a quiz, they will NOT be updated in the question banks.
It is best to import or create questions in question bank first so the questions will be organized in an orderly arrangement. For example, some instructors prefer to organize questions by chapter, subject, or question type. If questions are created directly in the quiz, the questions are automatically stored in question bank called unfiled questions. You can create several quizzes and the questions are stored in one huge bank. This will be make it difficult to reuse the questions. You can rename the bank or move questions to another bank at a later time; however, the work flow is not the best. It can be easy to forget to organize the questions in the Unfiled question bank after creating a quiz.

Importing Publisher Test Bank
QTI stands for Question & Test Interoperability and is a standard developed by the 1EdTech ConsortiumLinks to an external site. for sharing assessment data between platforms. Most textbook publishers offer resources with the adopted textbook. Contact your textbook publisher representative to see what is available. This can save valuable time if the publisher has resources that can be imported directly into Canvas. The resources may include QTI quiz import packages, course import packages, Word and PowerPoint files or other documents.
Publishers will often post QTI files on instructor resources page for the textbook. Instructors will typically have to create an account to gain access to these resources. QTI files are typically created with a particular LMS in mind. Basically they are designed to import the entire question bank from one file. Sometimes this works great and other times not so much depending on how well the textbook publisher configures the QTI file. Most publishers do not design package files specifically for Canvas because Canvas can import any QTI formatted quiz package (see guide linked below). If Canvas is not an option, try using the Blackboard 7+ option. If that doesn't work try the WebCT/Vista format. The Blackboard option is generally better because it preserves the quiz and question bank titles where the WebCT format does not. Often with WebCT import every quiz and question bank will have a title of "unnamed quiz". See the following guides for more details on this option.

Pros
- Quickly imports quizzes and question banks
- Doesn't require typing or copying and pasting questions
Cons
- Doesn't allow you to preview questions or choose questions to import
- Publishers typically will not have a file formatted for Canvas
- Questions and Quizzes may import as one huge quiz and question bank
- May require some clean-up in Canvas such as removing questions types you don't plan to use or create banks and moving questions into new banks for organization purposes
- Some publishers are lacking in support services

Managing Quizzes
You can allow individual students more time and extra attempts on quizzes as well as view quiz analytics.
How to Give Extra Time and Attempts
Quizzes have additional features that allow instructors to moderate quizzes. This is especially helpful for students who need extra time or when an instructor wants to extend the time the quiz is available for some students. Note: When giving extra time, you must apply the settings to each quiz separately.

Grading Essay Questions
You can grade questions directly in SpeedGrader. You can choose to grade essay questions by question.
Regrading Quizzes
This feature allows you to regrade a quiz. This is helpful if you find a question in a quiz that has an error after students have taken the quiz.
Important Notes
- This feature only works with quizzes where the questions have been added directly to the quiz. It does NOT work in quizzes with a question group that links to a question bank.
- This feature is only available for TF, Multiple choice, and Multiple answer question types.
