Converting PowerPoint Files to Video
Converting PowerPoint Files to Video
PowerPoint Recording Options
PowerPoint is a presentation tool that is often used to present information when lecturing to students in a classroom. If you are teaching an online course, it can be difficult for your online students to grasp the information in the PowerPoint file without your lecture.
In PowerPoint you can add video and audio files to help convey the information in a similar manner when you lecture in a face-to-face classroom. However, this will add to the file size of your PowerPoint file. If you record audio narration in each chapter or unit presentation in your course, this can add up quickly in the file section of your Canvas course and you will run out of space. The file space in each Canvas course is allotted 1GB. When you convert the presentation file to a video file, the video file can be added to your Studio account in Canvas and will not count against your course file space. The video in Studio can be embedded on any page in your Canvas course.
Steps to Create Video of PowerPoint
Below are the steps to create a multimedia PowerPoint. Click an item to view or use the expand all option to see all items in the list.
1. Record Audio in PowerPoint
If you are thinking about recording audio in a PowerPoint, it is important to consider the following.
- Length - When you upload directly to Studio, it can support uploads up to 10 GB. You can make longer recordings but it is important to note that larger files will take longer to process in PowerPoint and this can slow down your computer while the video processing is occurring. Additionally, videos longer than 10-15 minutes tend to lose students' attention. Try to keep your video content under 10 minutes in length. Break up longer presentation files into smaller files.
- Content script - Create a written script of what you plan to say in the video. This can help to keep you on track when recording the audio as well helping you to produce the captioning file.
Use the following Microsoft guides for steps on creating voice narration.
2. Convert a PowerPoint to Video
Review the following guide from the Microsoft website. It is important to know this will take several minutes or possible up to an hour to create the video file. Do NOT close the PowerPoint file while it is processing the video. You will see the status of the video processing in the status bar in PowerPoint.
3. Upload the Video to Studio in Canvas
Once the video file is done processing, you can upload the video to your Studio account in Canvas.
4. Caption the Video
Once the video is uploaded to your Studio account, captions will be autogenerated. The captions should be reviewed, edited and published before they will display with the video. All video content requires a text alternative per WCAG 2.0 standard Links to an external site.. This can be captions or text transcript. Optimally, you should include both. Use the following guides for step by step instructions.

5. Add the Video to Your Course
Once the video file has been created in your Studio account, you add it your course by creating a page in your course. To create a page in a Canvas course click Pages in the course menu. You can also create a page from the module page. When editing the page click the V icon in the toolbar and select Studio. Select the desired video to embed on the page. Be sure to save and publish the page when done. If you want grade students for participation in discussions or complete an embedded quiz in the video, the video must be added as external tool so grades will sync with the gradebook.
