Course Description

A medical professional's course in medical terminology.  Students will receive word parts going over primary terms, then review structure, and functions of the body systems, so they can relate those to medical specialists, pathology, diagnostics and treatment procedures.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Define and recognize medical word suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms.
  2. Understand and analyze medical terms by identifying the word components.
  3. Proficient in pronouncing medical terminology.

Required Supplies

Textbook—Medical Terminology for Health Professions, 8th Edition

  Internet—because this class is only offered online it is very important to have a good internet connection to be able to complete assignments and quizzes.

  • The Lymphatic and Immune Systems

  • The Urinary System
  • The Nervous System and Mental Health
  • Special Senses: Eyes and Ears
  • Skin: The Integumentary System
  • The Endocrine System
  • The Reproductive Systems
  • Diagnostic, Procedures, Nuclear Medicine and Pharmacology

Course Rules & Requirements

Attendance—Good participation is required to do well in this course.  Because this class is offered all online, if you are going to be absent, you are completely responsible contacting your instructor to discuss missed material.  For example, I have had a student who will be going on vacation and will not have internet access so they have contacted me about making up content before they leave.  Please plan ahead.

Due Dates—Assignments are due 11:59 p.m. at the end of the day designated.  Late homework will not be accepted.

Homework Guidelines—Multiple homework assignments will be assigned for each lesson covered.  All assignments must be completed in WORD and uploaded in the assignment as a word file.

Electronic Canvas Submission Guidelines—The following rules should be followed when submitting homework:

  • Each exercise will be saved and submitted in a separate Word file.
  • All homework will be completed using Microsoft Word 2010, 2013, or 2016.
  • Each file will contain a footer with your name at the assignment at the right.

Exams—Exam dates will be announced at the beginning of the semester. All exams will be offered online and you will not see what you have missed until I regrade the Exams.  Yes, I will always regrade every exam after it closes and I will then open the exam so you can see what you missed. 

Honesty—Copying the work of another student may result in dismissal from the course.  Knowingly permitting your work to be copied may also result in dismissal from the course.  (See Student Handbook for further provisions).

Quizzes

Quizzes—Missed quizzes cannot be made up.  If you know you are going to be gone when a quiz is assigned please make arrangements with me to make it up before you leave.

Homework 60%

Quizzes/Tests 40%

Grading Scale—Your final course letter grade will be determined according to the following scale:

Information Systems and Services is located in Virgil Learning Resource Center/Library (See Maps for directions.) in the lower level. ISS welcomes walk-in campus support Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm during the spring and fall semesters. During the summer the college is open from Monday - Thursday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. 

Personal WiFi hotspot devices called MiFis and computers can be checked out at the Circulation Desk of the Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center/Library (Links to an external site.). Contact 217-234-5367 or libcirc@lakelandcollege.edu to set up an appointment.

Academic Standards and Policies

For more information on academic standards and policies, please view the student handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to understand when they need to consider dropping/withdrawing from a course. Refer to the Lake Land College website for dates and deadlines. Instructors may withdraw a student from class if the number of absences is detrimental to the student’s ability to meet the course objectives. Instructors can withdraw students from a course prior to five instructional days before the first day of the final exam period.

Responsible Use of Classroom Content

Class discussions, papers, pictures, video, and any other student-created work for a course are all considered official course content. Student work, including papers, discussions, quizzes, assignments, etc., must be confined to the classroom (either on-campus or virtual) and should not be shared outside the classroom without the express permission of the student who created it. Students should respect the privacy of person-to-person or person-to-class communication in all forms. Violating student privacy may result in removal from the course. Significant or repeated violations may result in disciplinary action. This standard is pursuant to Board Policies 07.28.01 (Student Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures) and 11.15 (Acceptable Technology Use).

College Closings

The responsibility for canceling classes or closing for a specific period of time rests with the President of the College. When weather conditions prevent the opening of the College or cause a delayed opening of the College, announcements will be made on local radio and TV stations, and with text messaging, email and all other technology mediums available by 6:00 a.m. for that day.

Cancellation of day classes is not an automatic closing of evening sessions. The decision to close classes that begin at 5:00 p.m. or later will be made close to 2:00 p.m. as possible.
