WEL 057 | Welding Fundamentals
Course Description
The purpose of this course is to study various welding processes, methods, equipment, safety, and theory. Also to develop practical skills in welding that can be used in industry.

Required Supplies
The textbook for this course is Welding: Principles and Applications by Larry Jeffus.
Note: there will be no workbook for this course.
Safety is your responsibility.
Equipment:
- Safety Glasses
- Leather Gauntlet Welding Gloves
- Auto Darkening Welding Hood With Cover Lens Replacements
- Welding Jacket
- Vise grips or locking pliers
Safety glasses are mandatory to be worn over the eyes in the shop at all times according to Board Policy 11.19
You are required to purchase and wear safety glasses in the shop area. You are required to supply your own leather gauntlet gloves or leather work gloves and arm protection such as a canvas-type shirt or a light jacket will help protect you from minor burns (no nylon windbreakers or tennis shoes). Leather steel-toed boots are recommended or leather work boots. Tinted face shields and welding helmets will be available but it is recommended to supply your own.

Dates: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 10 am- 1 pm.
Grade Scheme
Coursework will include: reading the text, practicing various welding processes, and completing practical welding tests and written tests.
Grades will be determined as follows:

Attendance/Shop Practices; Attendance will be in accordance with Board Policy 06.24
If you are here on time, always put away tools and shut off welders and gas valves before leaving, refrain from horseplay and dangerous acts, and clean up the shop, you will get points for shop practices, otherwise, points will be deducted.
Leaving early without the instructor's knowledge will count as an absence. Attendance is essential and will be counted. If you are late your attendance may not be counted.
Canvas; canvas and Zoom meetings will be used for recording all projects, quizzes, and tests.
Chapters: points will be given for the covered chapters.
Quizzes; there will be a quiz on safety and handling of oxy/acetylene equipment.
Portfolio: Points will be given for a complete Portfolio of all handouts and lab sheets. The Portfolio will be turned in for grading before the Midterm and Final Tests.
Tests; there will be a mid-term test and a final written test to gauge your gain of welding knowledge.
Practical tests/Lab Projects; you will do a welding sample of the process we are currently covering. It will be graded on a scale of 1 to 25 points as to the specifications listed on the back of the procedure sheets.
Making up missed work or practical tests is your responsibility. Cheating on written or practical tests will not be tolerated and will result in a zero for that test.
The following grading standards will be used in this class:

Drop, Withdrawal or Incompletes from This Course
It is the student’s responsibility to understand when they need to consider dropping/withdrawing from a course. Refer to the Lake Land College website for dates and deadlines. Instructors may withdraw a student from class if the number of absences is detrimental to the student’s ability to meet the course objectives. Instructors can withdraw students from a course prior to five instructional days before the first day of the final exam period.

College Closings
The responsibility for canceling classes or closing for a specific period of time rests with the President of the College. When weather conditions prevent the opening of the College or cause a delayed opening of the College, announcements will be made on local radio and TV stations, and with text messaging, email and all other technology mediums available by 6:00 a.m. for that day.
Cancellation of day classes is not an automatic closing of evening sessions. The decision to close classes that begin at 5:00 p.m. or later will be made close to 2:00 p.m. as possible.
