TEXTVisual Anatomy and Physiology, 2nd ed. by Martini and Ober

OBJECTIVE:  The overall objective of this class is to provide the student with a solid foundation and understanding of key concepts within human anatomy and physiology. This objective will be met by a combination of sound file lectures, laboratory experiences, and homework. A more complete listing of individual objectives will be provided to the student at their request.

GRADING: A student's final grade will be determined as follows:

The final grade will be determined by averaging the homework grade, lab grade, exam grade, and practical grade.  The following scale will be used for final grades:

92% – 100%                A

84% – 91%                  B

76% – 83%                  C

70% – 75%                  D

Less than 70%             F

MIDTERM EXAM:

The midterm exam will consist of two essay questions (100 pts each).  The student will be given a list of possible essay questions at least two days in advance of the midterm exam.  The midterm exam questions will be chosen from this list.  The student will not be allowed a “cheat sheet” of any kind. Once a student starts the exam they MUST complete it within 2 hrs.

COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM:

The final exam will consist of five essay questions (100 pts each).  The student will be given a list of possible essay questions at least two days in advance of the final exam.  The final exam questions will be chosen from this list.  The student will not be allowed a “cheat sheet” of any kind. Once a student starts the exam they MUST complete it within 2 hrs.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

Homework will be in the form of assigned essay question(s) that the student will handwrite over and over in order to practice for the midterm and the final exam.  The handwritten copies will be collected and graded by the instructor.

If a student misses the due date for homework s/he will receive a zero for that homework set. There are NO EXCEPTIONS.

LAB QUIZZES:

Lab quizzes will be complete when students have accumulated 40 points from taking a quiz several times within one week. The lab quizzes have multiple questions, so you will be asked different questions each time you take it, and they are either matching or fill-in-the-blank in formatEach time you takes a quiz, you will earn a certain number of points toward the goal of 40 points. For example, let's say you earn 10 points out of a possible 10 points on your first quiz. That means you have to earn an ADDITIONAL 30 points by taking the quiz as many times as necessary to earn those remaining 30 points. Once you hit the goal of 40 points, you will earn a score of 100% for your lab quiz grade for that week. Alternatively, if a you fail to earn the 40 points total for the week, you will earn a score of 0% for your lab quiz grade for that week. Those are the only two grades possible for lab quizzes, so you will earn either 100% or 0% each week. Late work is not accepted, so you must earn those 40 points during the assigned week.

PRACTICALS

The practical average will consist of the student’s grade on 3 lab practicals.  A separate list of terms will be given to each student indicating the structures that s/he is responsible for during that unit’s lab practical.  The lab quizzes (matching and fill-in-the-blank) are designed to help you study for the actual practicals.  The final unit’s practical is COMPREHENSIVE. Once a student starts a practical they MUST complete it within 2 hrs.

CLASSROOM/CANVAS CONDUCT:

Students are expected to demonstrate respect toward the instructor, themselves, and their classmates.  Students whose behavior creates a disturbance or interferes with classroom activities will be given a verbal warning.  (Examples of class disruptions include allowing your phone to ring or speaking on the phone, reading material other than class materials, talking to fellow students, listening to music, working on e-mail or surfing the internet, etc.)  If a second incident occurs, students will be asked to leave, and may be subject to disciplinary actions and/or grade penalties at that time.  If a student is asked to leave, s/he will be required to meet with the instructor and the division chair before returning to class.  Further episodes of inappropriate behavior will also lead to the student’s removal from the classroom and will be reported to the college administration for disciplinary action.  To read more about what is expected of students at Lake Land College, see the passages titled "Students’ Rights,” "Student Conduct Code," and "Disciplinary Procedures" found in the LLC Student Handbook, or at this website: http://www.lakeland.cc.il.us/studenthandbook

NOTE:  The instructor reserves the right to supersede the steps described above in cases where the student’s behavior presents an immediate danger to the instructor, himself, and/or his classmates.
