SYLLABUS FOR BIO050 (Basic Anatomy & Physiology)

TEXT: Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology 6th ed., by Martini and Bartholomew
OBJECTIVE: The overall objective of this class is to provide the student with a solid foundation and understanding of key concepts within human anatomy and physiology. This objective will be met by a combination of lecture, laboratory experiences, and homework. A more complete listing of individual objectives will be provided to the student.
GRADING: A student's final grade will be determined based upon their homework avg., puzzles avg., and exam avg., and 10Xs HANDWRITTEN practice avg. The following scale will be used for final grades:
90 - 100% A
80 - 89% B
70 - 79% C
60 - 69% D
59% or lower F
FIRST THREE TESTS:
These exams will consist of 50 questions (for a total of 100 pts). The test will consist of multiple choice questions and short answer questions. The student will not be allowed a “cheat sheet” of any kind.
The student will be given 90 minutes to complete the test. The student will be given a week-long window of time during which time the student will have access to the test.
If a student fails to complete a test within the week-long window of time that the test is available then they will receive a ZERO for the test. There are NO EXCEPTIONS.
COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM:
The final exam will consist of 100 questions (for a total of 100 pts). The exam will consist of multiple choice questions and short answer questions. The student will not be allowed a “cheat sheet” of any kind. It will be averaged with the previous three exams to determine a student’s overall exam average.
The student will be given 120 minutes to complete the final. The student will be given a 48 hr window of time during which time the student will have access to the test.
The Final exam cannot be made up, regardless of the reasoning for missing it.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: Homework will be assigned each week. Homework will consist of a series of words and short answer questions. Students will be required to download and listen to a sound file related while completing each homework assignment. Each student’s homework will be collected at the end of the week that it is assigned.
If a student misses the due date for the homework s/he will receive a zero for that homework set. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. The two lowest scores for each student will be dropped when the student’s final class average is calculated.
Students are encouraged to work together but each individual student must turn in her/his own work in their own words. Turning in homework that is exactly the same as someone else’s and then saying that you both worked on it together is considered a breach of academic integrity.
PUZZLE WORKSHEETS: Puzzle worksheets will relate to the material from the homework that students submit each week. The purpose is to help the student learn the material in preparation for taking the exam. Students will be given a deadline/completion date by which they must complete/submit their worksheet(s). Each worksheet will be graded out of 100 pts.

3Xs HANDWRITTEN practice: Each week the students will be assigned a series of short answer questions, from the homework, that the student will HANDWRITE (NO TYPING ALLOWED) over and over again in preparation for the tests and the final exam. If a student misses the due date for the handwritten copies, s/he will receive a zero for that assignment.

ATTENDANCE: There is no attendance policy for this class.
ONLINE CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Students are expected to demonstrate respect toward the instructor, themselves, and their classmates. Students whose behavior creates a disturbance or interferes with online activities will be given a verbal warning. If a second incident occurs, students will be asked to leave the class, and may be subject to disciplinary actions and/or grade penalties at that time. If a student is asked to leave, s/he will be required to meet with the instructor and the division chair before returning to class. Further episodes of inappropriate behavior will also lead to the student’s removal from the classroom and will be reported to the college administration for disciplinary action. NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to supersede the steps described above in cases where the student’s behavior presents an immediate danger to the instructor, himself, and/or his classmates.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The following comes directly from the LLC Student Handbook.
Students will honor the tradition of academic honesty.
- No student shall, during the course of a quiz or examination (1) offer information of any kind to another student: (2) receive information of any kind from another student or from the quiz or examination responses made by another student; or (3) have in his/her possession any tool, written material, or other device which may be of assistance to him/her in taking the quiz or examination and which has not been authorized by the person proctoring the quiz or examination.
- No student shall submit to an instructor as his/her own any work which contains ideas or materials taken from another without full acknowledgement of the author and the source.
- No student shall take, steal, or otherwise procure in any unauthorized manner any piece or pieces of materials which contain the questions or answers to any examination scheduled to be given to any individual or group enrolled in any course of study offered by the College.
- No student shall sell, give away, lend or otherwise furnish to any unauthorized individual any piece or pieces of materials which contain the questions or answers to any examination scheduled to be given to any individual or group enrolled in any course of study offered by the College.
- The unauthorized possession of any of the aforesaid pieces of material shall be considered prima facie evidence of a violation of the provisions of this regulation.
- The instructor who has witnessed academic dishonesty or who has other evidence that academic dishonesty has occurred will confront the student to inform him/her of the allegation. Time permitting; the instructor will contact the Vice President for Student Services prior to talking with the student. If the student admits academic dishonesty, the instructor may give the student a reduced or failing grade in the course and will inform in writing the Vice President for Student Services. Other academic sanctions, such as disenrollment from the course or academic program or disciplinary penalties such as reprimand, probation, suspension, or dismissal, may be imposed in accordance with the Disciplinary Procedures section.
- If a student disputes the allegation, a hearing will be provided by the Vice President for Academic Services. An Academic Hearing Committee consisting of five (5) members (two students, two faculty members, and one administrator) will be appointed by the Vice President for Academic Services. The responsibility of the Academic Hearing Committee is to determine disputes concerning academic dishonesty. If, as a result of the hearing, the student is found to have committed academic dishonesty, the instructor will give the student a reduced or failing grade in the course. Other disciplinary sanctions, such as probation, suspension or expulsion, may be imposed by the Vice President for Student Services in accordance with the Disciplinary Procedures section of the Student Code of Conduct.
- A student accused of academic dishonesty in a course may not drop the course until such time as disciplinary action, if any, is conducted. If a grade of “W” is recorded for the course, it may be changed to reflect the disciplinary sanctions imposed as a result of academic dishonesty. In the event that the alleged violation occurs at the end of a term, an incomplete grade shall be assigned pending conclusion of the disciplinary process.
Lake Land College is committed to the fundamental values of preserving academic integrity as defined in this policy. Lake Land College may contract with an electronic service to detect originality of materials submitted by students. By registering for courses offered at Lake Land College, students consent that all assignments are subject to submission for textural originality reviewed by an electronic service. Assignments submitted to an electronic source may be included in the services restricted database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism (“LLC 2005 Student Handbook,” 2006).
CLASS GRADE QUESTIONS:
The instructor will not be available to answer any questions or address any concerns between semesters. Once final grades have been submitted, all questions, comments, or concerns will not be addressed by the instructor until the beginning of the following semester.
