Classroom Policies

Citizenship: Beyond transmitting knowledge, higher education is also concerned with creating responsible citizens for our democracy; therefore, the mutual respect between students is a valuable component of a good education -- as valuable as the respect between students and the instructor. Disrespectful words or actions towards fellow citizens will not be tolerated. Disruptive (disrespectful) parties will be asked to leave until they meet with the instructor and/or the appropriate persons to discuss correcting the issue.

Hate Speech will not be tolerated. Since this is a college classroom, students should expect to be challenged and/or uncomfortable. How we deal with that challenge and discomfort is what determines our potential for success. However, hate speech (words or phrases used to demean groups of people based on their identity), derogatory language, or threats will not be tolerated.

Participation: Be prepared for activities by reading and/or previewing material before class starts.

Missing or Late Work

  • No late homework is accepted; however, students can request 2 homework extension without need for explanation. The extension will include all of the assignments for that week.

Academic Integrity

At Lake Land College, it is assumed that students will honor the tradition of academic honesty. As such, students have the responsibility to be fully knowledgeable of the Academic Integrity Code, produce their own work, and encourage academic honesty among their fellow students.

For a description of what is considered to be academic dishonesty, please review the Academic Integrity Code available in the online Student Handbook and Right to Know. If you have questions regarding the College’s policy specifically related to this course, please do not hesitate to ask.

Help Desk Support

Canvas is the where course content, grades, and communication will reside for this course. For technical support contact the Information Systems and Services.

    • LRC 061 (lower level of the library)
    • 217-234-5261
    • Canvas Tutorial site - on demand support with guides and video tutorials

Attendance policy

I value frequent attendance and participation. Although neither is a formally graded element, missing 2 weeks worth of work, class meetings, or not logging into Connect can result in immediate withdraw from the course.

Section Meeting Dates, Times, and Location

Outline of Topics and Assignments

Connect Assignments

Most of the courses homework will be online through the Connect Spanish Website.

  • There is at least one Homework Assignment per week, due at 5pm on Monday Evenings.
  • In order to be successful in this class, it is highly recommended that you work on your homework every day and/or way before the due date because in my experience, it is impossible to complete the homework the night it is due

Chapter Exams

There is one exam for each of the five chapters covered in this course. The final chapter exam is the final exam.

Oral Exams

  • For each oral exam, you will be asked to provide a short response to class relevant topic.
  • The oral exams can be timed, so you will need to be able to respond in real time.
  • Do not read from a script; this is an assessment of your oral proficiency, not your reading.

Essays (in Spanish) and Cultural Interactions (can be done in English)

There will be five opportunities to write short essays based on each chapter’s theme or a relevant reading, and the opportunity to write on selected works of Spanish-Language Literature.

  • All Chapter Essays are to be completed in Spanish, and to prevent the abuse of online translation tools, Chapter Essays must be composed at the LLC proctoring center, my office, or another mutually acceptable location.
  • Each essay has its own unique minimum length requirements.
  • Other written works will also be in Spanish, but unless there is an issue, they do not need to be completed in a controlled location.

Cultural Interactions will be a Movie and a Song/Music Video

  • Movie 250-500 words:
    • Watch a movie from the list of approved films and write a brief summary in which you discuss your reactions and compare/contrast culture in the U.S. with the cultural represented in the movie. Culture can be hard to pin down, if you are unsure, ask me.
  • Song 200-250 words:
    • Listen and watch a Spanish Language Song on YouTube then write a brief summary in which you:
      • Compare and contrast the culture in the U.S. with the cultural represented in the song.
      • Discuss your reactions.
      • Compare the music style with your own musical tastes.

Evaluation Procedures and Grading Criteria

All Grades and the weekly calendar will be available on the Canvas/Connect website. If you have a question about an individual assignment, please feel free to ask the instructor. If you want your grade calculated, please use the information on Connect to calculate based on the following:

Connect Assignments          --               60%

Adaptive Learning                --                10%

Writing Tasks                         --               15%

Oral Exams                            --               15%

The weight of each assignment category reflects the importance of each type of assignment to overall success in the course; the points awarded for individual assignments reflect their value within each category not their value for the entire course.

I sincerely encourage students to approach me with and concerns, complaints, or issues that come from this class because when I have had students who were dissatisfied with the course in the past, most of those issues were addressed with an e-mail or a conversation about the issue at hand. More often than not, the issue is about the grade on a major assignment, and although I can't remember the last time I changed a grade, I sincerely welcome the opportunity to help students improve on their future work.

If there is ever an issue that you feel uncomfortable addressing with me, there are other places to turn for resolving concerns.

    • If you are a Lake Land Student, you have the right to contact my immediate supervisor:

Links to an external site.If you are taking the class as a Dual Enrollment High School Student, my immediate supervisor will not be able to assist you without the issue coming from the formal channels; therefore, you have the right to contact your school's Guidance Counselor, and they will be able to contact the proper person at Lake Land.

AI Use Prohibited

Students are prohibited from using artificial intelligence or machine learning tools, including but not limited to Grammarly, ChatGPT, Microsoft Word or Copilot, on assignments in this course. Each student must complete all assignments independently, without aid from others or automated tools, as noted in the Academic Integrity Board Policy 07.28.02.

I reserve the right to make changes to the syllabus to improve the course. Those changes will be announced in Canvas.
