Course Information

  • Course Code: JDA-071
  • You will learn the theory and operation of John Deere transmissions, axles, final drives, and gearboxes.
  • You must get the power trains FOS manual from the bookstore.
  • You will want to follow along in the book as we go through our PowerPoint slides in class.
  • We will spend most of the time in the classroom during the first powertrain class.
  • Service Center will be used for all technical information.
  • I will assign you DLM’s throughout this Mod, which must be done on time.
  • I will be giving you handouts at various times, and you are responsible for bringing them to class with you every day.
  • Attendance is mandatory for this course. Because this program is designed to prepare you for employment in the dealership environment, students are expected to treat class attendance the same as reporting to work.
  • Missing more than four class meetings during this course will result in automatic failure of the course.
  • If you must miss class, you are required to notify the instructor prior to the start of class. Failure to notify the instructor in advance will result in an unexcused absence and missed work may not be made up.
  • Excessive tardiness, leaving class early, or repeated disruptions may also be counted toward your absences at the instructor’s discretion
  • Late Work: Late work is not accepted under any circumstances.
  • Extra Credit: There will be no extra credit offered in this course.

Classroom Expectations

Students are expected to always maintain a professional learning environment. The following behaviors are required:

Be On Time and Prepared

  • Arrive to class on time and ready to begin.
  • Bring required materials each day (binder, notes, handouts, etc.).
  • Repeated tardiness may impact your daily grade.

Respect the Learning Environment

  • Do not talk while the instructor or other students are speaking.
  • Side conversations, interruptions, or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Students who interrupt instruction or distract others may be asked to leave for the day and receive a zero for the daily grade.

Cell Phones

  • Cell phones must be silenced and put away during class unless specifically permitted for class use.
  • If a phone becomes a distraction, the student may be asked to leave class.

Professional Behavior

  • Treat classmates, instructors, and equipment with respect.
  • Follow all safety procedures in both classroom and lab environments.
  • Conduct yourself in a manner consistent with expectations in a professional dealership shop.

Course Assessment

Your final grade will be determined by the following components:

80%: Tests, Quizzes, and Labs

  • This section includes your performance on tests, quizzes, and hands-on lab work. Mastery of the course content and practical skills is essential for success in this category.

10%: Daily Grade

Your daily grade reflects your professionalism and behavior in class and the lab, including:

  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Preparedness for class
  • Participation and engagement
  • Respectful behavior toward others
  • Following instructions and safety procedures

Disruptive behavior, lack of participation, or being unprepared may result in a reduction or loss of daily points for that day

10%: In-Class Worksheets
